When you own a car in the United States, you need to have it insured with the right auto insurance. Explaining Auto Insurance: A Beginner’s Guide

The type of coverage you have after an accident or other loss will depend on what type of auto insurance policy you purchased. Most people know that there are two basic types of auto insurance: full (sometimes called comprehensive) coverage and liability coverage. Usually, people who have newer cars or have a loan on their vehicles are going to choose full coverage, whereas people who have paid off their cars or can afford to replace them in event of a totaled vehicle will choose liability. Depending on the state you live in, you will have different auto insurance requirements for your coverage.

Comprehensive or full coverage is going to give you more benefits than most liability policies. For liability policies, you will generally only be covered for injuries or property damage that you might cause to other people and are therefore liable for. With comprehensive coverage, however, you can also protect yourself. This coverage may replace items stolen if your car was burglarized, repair your vehicle in case of fire or hail damage, or even cover windshield replacement if a rock hits you on the freeway. Keep in mind that many policies differ, and you should always check your policy to learn about your coverage.
